Tidying up...

Baby hat is finished and is on its way to a new baby girl soon. A few projects is keeping us busy.

Pepper plants have been trimmed and potted, with string attached to the winter water system, aka plastic water bottles. Trying something new this year, overwintering the plants outdoors in a do it yourself greenhouse. 

It involved some sewing and a patio table....

The strip sets joined in a tube for the Christmas quilt.

These one's are now in the finished pile and two more rows have been pulled to be worked on.

The charm swoop started in 2007, this is a slow project. Sometimes we need a different pace of life, this project is one of them. 

A busy week...

Once Thanksgiving is over, we know the window of opportunity and time to get everything ready for winter needs to get done. The top third was added on Wednesday,  a mixture of manure, top soil and peat. Some fairy dust in the form of earth worms was added lastly on top. They have now entered the soil and will be spending the non growing season preparing the soil for spring, while the weather is cold and the garden gets its winter break from the growing season. 

Monday was a day of getting the three new veggie garden beds filled to the two third mark with a mixture of peat and black soil. 

Before that it was filled with leaves and cardboard.

Even before that layer, it was filled with twigs and bits of wood for filler in the bottom of the box.

The liners was sewn and tack to the boxes before this step. So sewing was involved as well.

Some stems have been added to the red and white fourth vase. A bit more to do for this one.

The first three sets of pairs have been sewn into strip sets.

So not a lot of sewing, but we tidy up outside and winterize as much as we possibly can.  The peppers are back in pots, for winter. Their boxes we will make higher as well, so the soil have been removed this past week and they will be remade the same as the other three ones we made recently.  

So a busy week, with the rain expected this weekend moving dry soil was an easy decision. The raised posts will allow us to make covers to protect the plants against frost, as we will use them to add the covers onto.

Growing a veggie garden using raised beds for us has been very rewarding, digging in the soil and just relaxing. Have a wonderful weekend. 

Thanksgiving.

Today is Thanksgiving here in Canada.  A year in which we have lots of gratitude for so much, especially our family near and far, friends, health and everything we have. We are thankful and wish lots of love and wholesome goodness for each and everyone in the world. 

Yesterday was spent cooking veggies that we grew in our garden, it felt amazing to know we were eating something we grew in our small garden.

Nine patch lime blocks.

The trees are changing to reds very quickly and the leaves are fluttering down now.

One hundred and ten nine patch blocks finished for RSC21 colour challenge!

Playing with shades of colour.

Sometimes when we audition and play with fabrics, the hues come together after elimination of the colours which seems right when we place them in a group. Only then to discover that what seems to be right, is in actual fact a group of red herrings. 

These six fabrics was removed from the group, together they dance and work well, just not with the collection above.

It has to have five fabrics in groups of four per colour. Taking the picture and changing it too grey scale helps with this, removing the colour and seeing the values only.

From the top: green, dark blue, medium blue/turquoise-teal, lights medium to light. The last one is a zinger, which will make the quilt pop and create movement. If this fabric was just plain white it will make it too bland. Today started off as a rainy day, so it will be a relaxing day...

Lime green, black and grey.

The final colour for RSC21 is lime green. Two more blocks required after making the black and grey.

A new start.

Love the way these flowers just burst forward and gets covered in the orange flowers.  Just next to it we planted one with pink flowers.

They bloom best in late summer and fall. When everything else is winding down, they produce a show of colour.

The two selections so far.

A new start for a Christmas quilt, will play with the fabrics.  Need twenty fabrics and they have to be half meter pieces each.

Still surprised by the red sunflowers. 

Filling the boxes with some Apple wood.

Some organic matter. Next will be leaves from the Maple tree. These we will use the lawn mower to chop smaller. Then it will be soil, peat and compost. The wood is used to add bulk, so less soil is needed. It will breakdown in time. Waiting for the next RSC21 colour for October to be announced.
