Mystery quilt.

Bonnie Hunter is hosting her mystery quilt along again. The journey of the process can sometimes take you down a few roads and rabbit holes. Getting flying geese consistently the right size can be all about the practice. (The pieces above are the dog ears trimmed from one method, mini pinwheels?)
While trying out the different ways to make them, lost count and made 44 extra flying geese. Also cut the same amount of extra squares...
Part four of the mystery was these hour glass blocks. Finished them before part five was released. They only got trimmed to the correct size after part five went live.
Will be working on this group today, then adding the corner blocks, before trimming them to the correct size. The hot pink fabrics has now got a purpose, it feels good to use them. Some quilters think they know what the pattern wil be, to me the surprise is so much more fun at the end when it is finished and reveal the pattern.

A Christmas quilt.

This is the quilt for our eldest son and his wife.
They sent me three quilt pictures of what they liked. I got to choose  and they did not know which one they where getting.
Told them this pattern was no longer available,  so they thought I was making another pattern.
The finished quilt, took a picture in this snow. I put a clean painting waterproof sheet down first, so the quilt will stay dry. This has now left for their home.
Machine free motion quilting and handquilting was used.Quilted Celtic designs on the four corners of the second borders.
It was started on the second of October and finished on the 8th of December this year.Lightning strikes by Chris Timmins is the pattern. It called for a half a meter of each of the fabrics, if you are making a Bargello quilt for the first time, rather use .6m per fabric and cut one extra strip, of each colour. If you have made many, then you know how to sub cut and remake new strips to use further along the pattern.
All this snow is almost all gone, we had rain for most part of the day. The happy couple loved their quilt, we did a zoom call and it was fun to see their response. Spent hours cooking and enjoying a family day, now the kitchen is tidy and we will be putting up our feet and relaxing while watching a movie.

Snow progress.

It was snowing here today and two rounds of snow shoveling happened. Before the plough and after it came.

Kate and I did a swap, she sent me some pinks. They arrived this morning.

The post office has so many parcels, they are sending notifications for parcels to be collected. Rayon embroidery thread has arrived! Will be using it for machine quilting,  applique and embroidery.

Some sewing happened. Slow progress, which is fine as we got to chat to our eldest son and his wife. It was great to just relax.

Flying geese two different ways, using scraps.

Bonnie Hunter’s mystery quilt along.

Made more than what is required. Had fun practicing how to make flying geese with different methods.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, all over ther world.

Works in slow progress.

It has been a fast month. Time just went past in a whirl. While working on the Christmas quilt, November became December. On sunday I asked what the date was? the 19th! It made me realize there was no more weekends to Christmas. No wonder the cherries and pineapple was sold out at three different grocery stores.
Once the trip to yet another grocery store, in which the missing items was found for Christmas : a Sigh of relief. Back to the working on the churn dash four patch blocks. Also finished Part one for the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt.
Also made the flying geese units(part two), they still need to be trimmed. Part three is cut and will be added to part one, as per the instructions.
The fabrics for part four is ironed and ready for cutting. Today is the first day of winter, so the winter stitching projects are out and will get some more love.

Omygosh.

When the nine patch blocks for the RSC21 colour challenge was made, this was the basket with the strips of fabric. The alternating blocks between the nine patch blocks are churn dash blocks.
They have scrappy four patch blocks,  turned on point. Some are done and others still need to be done. In total 80 blocks have those four patch blocks.  Still need to sew a 119 four patch blocks?
Will continue to piece them for the rest of year.
Part one of Bonnie Hunters mystery quilt along is sewn, will trim the dog ears this week.
Part two is cut and awaiting sewing.
Part three is cut out and ready. Lots of cutting got done this past week. The King size quilt took two days to arrive via shipping and our eldest son and his wife,  will be opening it on a video call on Christmas day( we want to see their response, they gave three choices 8f patterns originally).  With all covid,  they do not feel comfortable travelling by plane. So it will be a quiet one for us, hence a new start. From afar, every year I have watched the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt alongs. This year all those fabrics just clicked and it was time.
The snow just started, we are expecting about 5-10cm of snow today. It is a whole day event, perfect for escaping into my sewing room, to sew...
Happy Birthday to Craigh!

Saturday 11 December 2021

It has been busy the last couple of weeks.

I have been going through scraps and fabrics bought and waiting for the right project to come along. Then these ones joined the others. I looked at it all and thought what in the world was I thinking?
Then Bonnie Hunter posted part 1 of her mystery for their 2021. Pulled the cranberries and cream and it had a purpose.
Before this project can get started, a King size quilt had to be finished.  Christmas cards and letters written and sent off. The last thing to do was bake ginger cookies. All is done, we are currently under a windstorm, which has not calmed down with sustained winds of 100km per hour. So it will have to wait until tomorrow. Have seen trees down and branches flying in the wind.
